Recorded by Don Brown and the Ozark Mtn. Trio. The song was written by Damon Black, a talented Country and Bluegrass songwriter associated with Porter Wagoner and Bill Monroe. He also wrote the songs, "Tall Pines" and “I Haven’t Seen Mary in Years”. Interest in the song has revived due to it's inclusion in the 2016 double album project by Michael Daves, "Orchids and Violence".

The Jen Larson Recording Project - Summer 2013 I've begun working with producer Michael Daves and some of the best pickers in the growing NYC bluegrass scene on a new recording! It's all analog, and made right here in the Old First Reformed Church in Brooklyn, an acoustically fantastic space. Progress reports at: JenLarsonMusic
such a deep groove on this one, very acoustic metal, yet ancient.
Wow, two heavy hitters playing, I think, one of Bill's most powerful tunes ever.
ROCKIN' version. So soulful.
Never heard harmonica played like that before! Heart stopping!
Jefferson is so underrated. He performs so perfectly in harmony in every recording. He has such focus. So nice to watch.
Been a fan of Micheal Daves for years. Thanks for uploading the OG!
Its wicked good
This is a song that I return to constantly. It is both a call to live life to its fullest and a comfort for those who you miss who are beyond the grave. Thank you for making it and may God grant you peace and happiness.
Beautiful harmonies and instrumentals!
Beautiful version of this song, so pure. Can someone please tell me the key it is played in as am trying to learn it myself. Thank you.
Pure magic.
This is what I call a masterpiece..
It's just over a year since we lost my Dad to this dreadful pandemic and laid him to rest in 'the old churchyard' with his parents and his ancestors. This time last year, your beautiful recording brought me comfort, and it still does. Thank you. xxx
Best version on RUclips! Spot on 👍
flourish
Two immense talents!!!!!
Most insight on instrument solos I have ever heard. Great!
Boy, that mandolin really barks.
Excellent. Very helpful! Thanks. If a mandolinist can keep in mind the sung harmony as well as the melody, playing parts of the harmony while soloing instead of the melody will be recognized by listeners and enjoyed because of the novelty and recognition combined.
What’s the lyrics to this version?
spectacular
What’s the lyrics for this song?
Of course, he is absolutely right on this. I would just add that I take Red Allen vocal lines and slow them down to like half speed and sing along. Whomever it is, if they are a good singer then slowing it down and singing along is a real learning experience for me. so like learning vocal licks - the same thing is great for ideas for mandolin or whatever. I find there is so much going on with the vocal line embellishments but you have to really focus in on the line. Slowing down and pulling vocal lines for instrument solos is great practice for me and helps me come up with non-cliche licks.
Beautiful writing, playing and singing.
I loved this! ❤️
Such great music. Keep on singin’!!!! (Keep writing too)!
Big Mon would have dug this !
ruclips.net/video/PMzdlW3-A28/видео.html Really captures Defords pain. Great job
I'm not even a Bluegrass guy but play mando and this still very valuable knowledge here.
Beautiful Eamon and Jefferson!
Amazing song so well done ever adore thank you ever
Amongst my favorites of sensibilities and voice! Eamon you are truly a soul sayer!
You both were great in Bantry, county Cork, Ireland last year. Now we will see and hear you both in the theater "De Paarl van Zuilen" (The Pearl of Zuilen) in the Netherlands.
this is amazing i love it
That's really lovely! So great to hear such a good approach to traditional song on string instruments!! Bravissimo! Andy Irvine
OMG OMG
Nice version, one of many of the "Night Visiting Song". There are so many variant poetical verses to this plot, in Ireland, the UK and even the USA "Katy, Dear", "Silver Dagger" etc., that it becomes tough to fit them all into one version. Good job, lads.
RECORDED AND LIVE, THEY DO THE BEST VERSION OF THIS SONG EVER.
wow just wow
What Heidi Said,DANG!!
Amazing version ever wowwwww adore this ever thank you
Bravo. Absolutely incredible performance.
Love it. Great words, singing and harmonies, and instrument playing.
Great sound.Thankyou
Beautiful arrangement, and amazing harmonies, as usual
Incredibly helpful. Thank you.
Beautiful moving song , it was played at my Father's Funeral a couple of days ago , I will never be able to listen to it again without a tear in my eye
It's the those lil licks I'm having problems been trying to play for long enough to pick up things if I'm shown you one of best teachers I've watch and looks like you make it simple and love the sound that you can make come from that lil box wow great video
Would like to have some pointers on playing this lil instrument if any body could help me I would be very appreciative for some of these licks broke down a lil or better video angle
A lot of wisdom here!
After discovering Jefferson Hamer with Anais Mitchell's Tam Lin - I'm seeing him everywhere! He seems to know what I like! But does he always wear the same shirt??? So funny.
Caleb Klauder does that too, wears the same shirt all the time, well not so much anymore, but my guess is it has something to do with luck.
Thanks for the video. I find it very helpful. And what a great song to practice on. Thanks again!!
